Dec 6 (GV) Despite having a high literacy rate, free education and good humanitarian development indicators, SL society’s attitudes towards the disabled are still mired in the past although the country has 1.4 million people or seven percent of the population living with some form of disability. Disability is a taboo topic and giving birth to a child with a disability is considered as a curse or a result of a sinful past life. Teaching feminism at SL universities
Dec 6 (Island) Recently, I was in a discussion on Feminism with the members of the Post-Graduate Research (PGR) community at the University of Hull, in the UK. They were my colleagues, from the Middle-East, Asia and Europe, representing the natural and social sciences, but, apparently, did not possess any prior knowledge on feminism. I say this because most in the natural sciences seemed to characterise feminism as a political ideology against man (man in this context represents male).

Over 300 graduates imprisoned last year

No bus fare revision: Gemunu
Dec 6 (DM) Bus fares would not be revised as announced earlier following the reduction of the price of diesel by Rs. 10, Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association (LPBOA) Chairman Gemunu Wijeratne said. He said the provisions of the National Policy on bus fares were only applicable if the diesel price was increased by a 4% difference according to the fuel price formula.
