Can Executive Presidency be abolished without a referendum? |
June 4 (Island) The constitution making process has been hamstrung by the insistence of the SLFP faction in the govt that any constitutional reform would have to done without a referendum. According to the book Yuga Peraliya written about the campaign to defeat the Rajapaksas by JHU activist Asoka Abegunawardene, this proviso was deliberately introduced into Maithripala Sirisena’s manifesto so that it could be used later to prevent the abolition of the executive presidency.

Foreign debt: Not just about interest and repayment |
June 4 (CT) Among many other attractive quotes in the House of Cards, the popular political TV series, there was a very interesting one that I kept repeating to myself. When money comes your way, you do not ask questions. This, I think is applicable to human beings, as well as to those human beings who run govts. It is similar to public debt when it is obtained. Hardly any questions are asked at the time of obtaining loans and only later govts realize the mess they have made.

Tahir torments favourite opponents again |
June 4 (CI) In the two preceding matches of the tournament, three fine batsmen - Tamim Iqbal, Joe Root and Kane Williamson - racked up centuries. On Saturday, Hashim Amla joined the club. It needed something special to shade that, and Imran Tahir came up with that defining performance. Having made 299, South Africa watched Sri Lanka's top order race to 116 for 2 in 16 overs. Tahir's delayed introduction raised a few eyebrows, but he made an impact immediately.

73rd Bradby Shield- 2nd leg: Royal complete another master-class |
June 4 (ST) A master-class by Royal’s famed forwards made certain that the coveted Bradby Shield remained at the Royal Complex for another year at least. Trinity’s forwards were not in the picture and they were forced to play second fiddle to a rampant Royal side that, at times, put on a regal show of power and tactical nous. The final score line of 13-8 could lead one to believe that the match was oh-so-close. That was not the real situation however. A first half that meandered, and

CT 2007: Tahir, Amla lead rout of SL |
June 4 (CI) Sri Lanka had lost five ODIs to South Africa already this year, but had hoped that months later, playing for a different trophy, they could apply the lessons learned during that walloping. It wasn't to be. The gulf in quality between these teams was borne out by the margin of South Africa's victory: 96 runs. In fact, South Africa may reflect that despite Hashim Amla's velvet 103 from 115 balls, and Faf du Plessis' efficient 75,
