Aug 12 (ST) During the five years following the end of the civil war in 2009, the Sri Lankan economy grew at an average annual rate of 7.4%. This was by far the highest average growth rate for any consecutive five-year period in the country’s post-indepenent history. Per capita income increased from US$ 2031 in 2009 to $3,536 in 2014. The rate of inflation came down from a historical height of 22.6% in 2008 to an average annual rate of 5.5% during the ensuing years.

Abducted girl’s body found yesterday |

Body found at ex-minister’s residence |
Aug 12 (CT) The body of former Minister C.B. Ratnayake's missing driver was found in his official residence in Torrington, Colombo yesterday. ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said, the body was found after the wife of the driver had received a suicide letter written by the driver. Excise busts duty free racket |
Aug 12 (Island) Officers of the Excise Department on Monday detected a large scale duty free racket involving premium foreign liquor and cigarettes from a warehouse at Bloemendhal Road, Colombo-13 and took into custody 4,300 bottles of imported liquor and 450,000 contraband cigarettes. Aug 12 (Reuters) Sri Lankan shares closed at their highest in nearly seven months on Wednesday as hopes of improved corporate earnings and political stability after the Aug.17 parliamentary election boosted sentiment, brokers said. Aug 12 (EN) Sri Lanka's vehicle registrations hit a new high of 61,953 units in July 2015, up 85% from a year earlier, will cars up 85 percent, three wheelers up 73% and motor cycles up 68%, an analysis of data showed, amid low interest rates. Car registrations rose to 9,666 units in July 2015, up from 2,555 in 2015 with small car sales rising 5,393 units from 367 units a year earlier, following a tax cut in January, an analysis of vehicle registry data by J B Securities, a equity brokerage showed.
