“I am no one’s rubber seal” – Anandasangaree

Jan 27 (NS) With speculation rife of an ongoing tug-o-war between several senior politicians for the top slot in the proposed Northern Interim Council, seasoned politician V. Tamil United Liberation Front Leader and former MP from the north Anandasangaree told The Nation that there were many issues he had to consider before taking up the position. more..

A mountain of labour produced an APRC mouse!

Jan 27 (NS) After much hype and more hyperbole, the proposals of the All Party Representative Committee (APRC) were unveiled last week, as they were handed over to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, ostensibly for implementation ‘with immediate effect.’ The process itself involved 63 sittings over a year and a half and fourteen political parties at its conclusion - there being more at the inception with some of them opting out at various stages. more..

The powerful Defence Secretary is embroiled in a controversy after British prosecutors said on Friday that he had assisted Karuna to obtain the passport. “I haven’t helped him (Karuna). It is wrong for the British Judiciary to make public these claims without verification,” he said. more..

“Won’t come back with Mago Digo Die” -Geetha

Jan 27 (LB) “I am desperate to act,” stresses award-winning actress Geetha Kumarasinghe. “I am dying to act! — I want to act! — But I don’t get the correct role,” complains this diva of the Sinhala Cinema. In 2005, Geetha bagged the President’s Award for Best Actress for her unforgettable performance in Ran Diya Dahara. Since then it’s been a while and she is waiting to be cast in a Sinhala film. “This is so unfair. It’s been three years and I am yet to find a proper character with a good script,” she complains. more..

Arming supporters not the way to go says JVP

Jan 27 (Island) While welcoming the decision to issue weapons to people living in villages vulnerable to LTTE attacks, the JVP has urged the government to be cautious in arming people. He warned that security measures that were being implemented to meet the LTTE challenge could further aggravate the problem. more..

1987 Revisited

Jan 27 (Island) The All Party Representatives Committee (APRC) unveiled their proposals last week thus marking another milestone in what seems to a futile quest for a solution to Sri Lanka’s ethnic conflict. The question that we have to ask ourselves is why every solution that comes up seems to revolve around the 13th amendment to the constitution? The present writer was at a seminar some months ago, where Professor Johann Galtung, one of the world’s foremost peaceniks, said that in his view the ideal solution would be the 13th amendment plus-plus and ISGA minus-minus. more..

Unfinished business after the CFA

Jan 27 (Island) With the CFA behind us, there remains the task of mopping up its detritus, rethinking some of the knee-jerk solutions being re-advocated, and correcting fundamental flaws in our search for a solution. This is necessary in order to avoid kicking the ball into our own goal. Proscribing the LTTE The LTTE was proscribed in 1998 after their attack on the Dalada Maligawa. The proscription was removed in 2002, not because they had ceased to be terrorists (the only ground warranting de- banning), but more..

Govt. reverts to the unlucky 13th

Jan 27 (ST) A patient suffering from mild ulcer was given a drug. It did not cure him. His condition became worse and turned into cancer. Twenty-one years later, the same patient is administered the same old drug. Is this reasonable? The 76-year-old Veerasingham Anandasangaree, leader of the moderate TULF, raised the question from President Mahinda Rajapaksa last Tuesday. The occasion was a hurriedly summoned meeting of members of the All-Party Representative Committee (APRC) at Temple Trees. more..

Pressure mounts on LTTE: Tell the truth now

Jan 27 (ST) The truth, they say, is the first casualty of war. In more than two decades of the separatist war in Sri Lanka, this axiom has been proved right many a time. If one were to add up the casualty figures put out by Government officials since inception, it would have wiped out the population of Jaffna twice over. There would be no one left. On the other hand, if all the casualty figures for the Security Forces, given by the LTTE are added up, a sizeable segment of the Security Forces would have been wiped out. That is not true either. more..

Baby racket in three major hospitals

Jan 27 (ST) Three state-run maternity hospitals are the focus of a CID investigation into what may be a massive baby smuggling racket as detectives discover false birth certificates that have been issued recently. 'Air defence system preventing LTTE to launch aerial attack'

Jan 27 (PTI) Revamping of Sri Lanka's air defence system has prevented the LTTE's air wing to launch aerial attacks as in the past, the Air Force chief has said. Questioning the outfit's so-called air wing, Roshan Gunathilake said the outfit hardly has an air force worth its name. "They (LTTE) have two or three aircrafts. I don't know whether you could call that an air force. They have not flown for a very longtime. We will wait and see," more..

The Enemy Within

Jan 27 (SP) The LTTE is taking a beating. Dozens of weapons storage sites have been captured by the military. These include boats that provided floating ammo dumps (some holding up to a thousand tons of munitions and supplies), able to move along the north coast to where they were needed. It was the crushing in 1962 of the military and police officers coup. In its wake was born the Bauddha Jaathika Balavegaya or the BJB (Buddhist National Force) led by L.H. Mettananda. Understanding Political Future of UNP

Jan 28 (SLW) The UNP held its 52nd annual convention on December 16, just two days after their budget debacle. As could be expected, the convention was hardly an exuberant affair, coming so soon after yet another ‘defeat’. Normally, the budget is supposed to be yet another bill passed in parliament and not a contest between the government and the opposition. But thanks to the `topple the government’ effort and the psy-ops launched by the UNP, it became an election-like contest and even the results were announced in election style. more..

Buddha's revolutionary step of rejecting Brahaministic restrictions on women

Jan 28 (SLW) The document on feminism that I circulated recently apparently has become a centre for controversy. It was not meant for that. The document was an out come of a discussion we had in the OUSL when I was assisting as a consultant in the engineering faculty. I was interested in the effect of human social activity on the development of technology. We discussed the reproduction of human as a process of production. more..

No holds barred in Sri Lanka

Negative Criticisms of the APRC Proposals

Jan 28 (PISL) There has been much discussion recently regarding the proposals of the APRC which the Government has decided to implement. Much of this is based on ignorance and illogicality, and is symptomatic of a general tendency to look at matters in a negative frame of mind. The proposal is based on the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, and it is claimed that from the inception this was deemed inadequate by the Tamil people. This is nonsense. more..

Guns, guns and more guns in Sri Lanka

Jan 28 (LNP) Terror strikes in Moneragala have given an impetus to the proliferation of small arms in the country. An already unwieldy problem has been compounded. Given the sheer magnitude of the task that the security forces and the police are saddled with, the knee-jerk reaction of the government was to distribute arms among the villagers vulnerable to terror attacks besides deploying the army, the STF and the police to comb the jungles in a bid to hunt down a small group of LTTE killers. more..
