Minister Amunugama, returning to Sri Lanka after concluding his visit to China recently said that the Chinese authorities have agreed to initiate the project with the Export and Import Bank (EXIM) bank disbursing a down payment of 15 per cent of the total amount.

Eleven escape from LTTE captivity |
July 17 (LNP) Eleven people, abducted by the LTTE and held in Thoppigala, surrendered to the Kinniyadi Army Camp yesterday. They said the LTTE was concentrating on escape routes when the Army surrounded Thoppigala and this paved the way for them to escape. The LTTE had killed about 100 prisoners, they said. Describing their daily routine, the prisoners said they were made to toil from early in the morning until dusk without proper food or rest.

Civilians say LTTE used them as slaves: Military |
July 17 (DM) A large number of civilians detained as prisoners in LTTE custody in Thoppigala revealed they were used as slaves and were forced to set up landmines which killed nearly 100 of them. Eleven such detainees, who escaped from the LTTE custody before the capture of Thoppigala, told the military that more than 80 detainees were killed for not obeying orders, a senior military official said.

Maid's clemency papers are filed |
July 17 (BBC) An Asian rights group says that it has met a deadline in Saudi Arabia for legal papers to be filed in the case of a Sri Lankan maid facing execution. The maid, Rizana Nafeek, is accused of killing a baby in her care. She had originally confessed to killing the four-month-old Saudi baby boy in 2005 but later retracted her statement saying it had been made under duress.

July 18 (ISL) Thoppigala, formerly known as Barron’s Cap has been captured by the Sri Lankan army. This part of the country was inaccessible to the Sri Lankan government for decades. The people of the region confirm that they generally call it Thoppigala and rarely calls it "Kudumpimalai". Thoppy means cap and "Kal" means hill. "Thoppy" is a Tamil word and "gala" is a Sinhalese word. Nonetheless, the name Thoppigala has been in use for decades by the people of the region irrespective of their race or religion.

July 18 (LBO) An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale had occurred in the Bay of Bengal 510 kilometres to the East of the Sri Lankan capital Colombo, the US Geological Survey said. The breach occurred 35 kilometer below the surface of the earth at 04:27:28 Universal Time, or 09.57 am local time.
