Caramel Bread & Butter Pudding

    6 oz sugar
    1\2 pint boiling water
    4to 5 thick slices of bread
    2 oz sultanas
    1 tin condensed milk
    4 eggs
    vanilla & little ground nutmeg


    Put the sugar in a pan and heat gently until it is
    brown, add the water and simmer to produce syrup.
    Put the bread and fruit in a deep well greased baking
    dish. Add two tins of water to the condensed milk. Then
    add the milk and essence to the beaten eggs. Pour the
    sugar syrup over the bread, add the egg mixture and
    sprinkle lightly with nutmeg.

    Stand the dish in a tin of water, place near the bottom
    of a moderate oven. Serve the pudding hot or keep it
    in a fridge.
