CWC decides to contest Provincial Polls under UNP

May 28 (IL) The Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) has decided to contest the forthcoming Provincial Council Election on the United National Party (UNP) ticket, CWC MP Muthu Sivalingam said.

Accordingly, the CWC will contest the Uva, Central and Western provinces under the UNP banner, but will go it alone in the Sabaragamuwa province.

MP Sivalingam also said that they would not sign a new Memorandum of Understanding with the UNP, because “from the beginning we have had a clear understanding with them,” he said. The CWC, which is the main estate sector political party, also contested the recent General Election under the UNP, and secured eight Parliamentary seats.

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, early this month decided to contest the provincial polls alone. However a final decision on contesting the Kandy and Badulla districts is to be taken after consultations with the CWC.

SLMC Secretary General Hasan Ali said earlier that, if the CWC decides to contest Kandy and Badulla under the UNP, then they too will contest the polls in these two districts under the UNP banner.
