Media: watch it!

Dec 13 (IL) Academics and senior journalists have warned of the adverse effects the media could have on the peace process if they failed to promote national unity. The role of the media came under the searchlight at a workshop held in Colombo organized by the National Peace Council and the Federation of the North South Journalists. The resource persons addressing the workshop said that in the north and in some other parts of the country certain media institutions appeared divided on ethnic lines. Veteran media personality Sunanda Deshapriya noted that most of the Tamil newspapers leaned towards the LTTE while the Sinhala papers took the side of the Sinhala Parties. He said that such an approach would be harmful to the sovereignty of all ethnic groups.
