Shocking report on how private firm made 14.8bn profit by selling power
Feb 26 (ST) An independent power producer (IPP) selling electricity to the national grid since the early 2000s had by March 2021 made a net profit of Rs 14.8bn amounting to 855% of its initial investment. From 2005 to 2015, Aitken Spence-owned ACE Power Embilipitiya Ltd earned a net profit of Rs 8.57bn or 511 percent of its initial capital of Rs 1.67bn. Massive protest by some 8000 SL fishermen against Minister’s concession to India
Feb 26 (ST) More than forty Jaffna district fishermen’s associations with a membership totalling about 8000 will drag their fishing boats to the road in protest against Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda’s proposal to allow Indian fishermen to engage in fishing in SL waters. Tax relief: No way now, President tells unions

Local council polls: New date to be announced on Friday
Feb 26 (ST) The Election Commission will postpone the local govt elections by three weeks, to sometime possibly even beyond April while commencing fresh negotiations with the Treasury on securing funds, Chairman of the Commission Nimal Punchihewa said. Colombo District property up 14.8% in 2H 2022
Feb 26 (EN) Property in Colombo district had risen 14.8% in the second half of 2022 from a year earlier according to a Land Valuation Indicator tracked by the central bank. Residential values had grown 15.2%, commercial 15.7% and industrial 13.6%. In the second half of 2021 land values had grown 17.9%. Compared to the second half of 2021, land values in the Colombo district had fallen 4.8%. The residential LV I had fell 0.7%, Commercial 0.9% and industrial 7.5%.

Govt settles Rs.191bn worth of arrears to various contractors and suppliers
Feb 26 (DM) The govt has settled the majority of the arrears to the tune of Rs.191 billion to contractors and suppliers, after assuming power on August 31, last year, despite an 8% contraction in the economy during the year, Finance State Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said. As of August 31, last year, govt owed Rs.360 billion to various contractors and suppliers. As of January 31, 2023, the govt has been able to settle 53% of these bills, amounting to Rs.191 billion.
