Where are we headed?

Aug 7 (Island) Where the country is headed remains very much in the air as this is being written. The frightening fuel queues remain a fact of life although there was some respite after the QR code became effective from last week. The long lines have by no means evaporated and it is obvious to the simplest mind that whatever scheme is enforced – be it the last digit of the registration number for a small entitlement on specific days of the week or the newest method now in operation – more..

A visionary plan

Aug 7 (SO) Statesmen think of the next generation but politicians think of the next election. This is a universal truth. SL had so far lacked leaders who belonged to the former category, but Prez Ranil Wickremesinghe has shown to the world that he is a true statesman in every sense of the word with his recent speech to Parliament which was well received even by the Opposition. Prez Wickremesinghe spoke in terms of a 25-year plan titled the National Economic Policy (NEP) to more..

'Country’s downfall due to public finance management blunders'

Aug 7 (SO) Parliament is responsible for the economic crisis. According to the constitution, Parliament is responsible for the finances of the country. Therefore, Parliament is responsible for govt revenue expenditure, budget gap and borrowing and debt settlement. Parliament prepares related ordinances and authorises the establishment of relevant institutions for this purpose. If MPs do not accept any proposals more..

Remember Ranil is revengeful & A risk to rights

Aug 7 (CT) The five big Rs in my title all serve a purpose. Remember, recalls past experience which is that Ranil Wickremesinghe (RW) is a Risk to democratic Rights and some say that he in prone to be Revengeful. Therefore, we have to remain on guard for another 2 ˝ years till the constitutionally legitimate term of the current presidency expires. Unfortunately, circumstances are more complex and dangerous; I will deal with that anon, but first I must say upfront that RW is Prez legitimately and more..

The system change that can enable Sri Lanka to recover from this massive crisis

Aug 7 (Island) The massive crisis that has affected the lives of nearly all classes in our society, specially the poor and middle, in Sri Lanka is not new to us or to most other countries. It is an inherent cyclical feature, occurring at about seven year intervals, due to boom and bust nature of the global market driven capitalist economic system brought on by over production. Periodically it may get out of control, like the Asian crisis of 1997 when a whole region was badly affected. more..

Govt’s catch 22 over Chinese ‘spy ship’ ends with rescinding permission to dock in Lanka

Aug 7 (TM) The tasks that lie ahead for the Govt of Prez Ranil Wickremesinghe are no easy ones, with the ongoing diplomatic quagmire with India and China over a controversial Chinese vessel that was to dock in SL this week undoubtedly making things worse for the administration. Closure or complication?

Aug 7 (TM) That SL is at the crossroads is an acknowledged fact. It has to decide which way it must turn in order to overcome the challenges that lie ahead and that decision is now in the hands of the nation’s new Chief Executive. Whichever way he chooses to turn, the road ahead is bound to be a bumpy one. It is in this context that many are wondering as to whether the Prez has made the right turn, given the events that have unfolded since he assumed office, notwithstanding more..

Corporations, Boards and Foundations

Aug 7 (Island) One of the occupational hazards of the Planning Ministry was that one is obliged to serve on boards of corporations as a member. By statute and by practice, Planning Ministry was represented on many governing boards. I represented the Ministry on several of them, and serving on these boards was interesting and instructive. Whether I contributed to the work of these organizations is something I cannot say. I had a busy schedule of my own, and more..

People participation and transparency in public finance

Aug 7 (ST) Prez Wickremesinghe lost no time since assuming the high office he now holds in presenting his vision for the future of Sri Lanka. His plans went as far as 2048 when this country is expected to celebrate, not just mark, 100 years of independence from 450 years of foreign rule. That it should have taken that long for a country which received its political independence nearly 75 years ago and has now become a bankrupt nation to become a developed country speaks for itself. more..

The task of keeping Ranil on the straight and narrow

Aug 7 (ST) My dear Sajith, Anura, Champika, the Field Marshall and Aiyo Sirisena, I thought I should write to you this week after hearing that Uncle Ranil had extended an invitation to all of you to join him in an ‘all-party government’. He has been saying this for some time. He repeated this in Parliament on Wednesday. Most of you met with him this week to discuss this issue. From what I hear, none of you had been very eager to respond to Uncle Ranil’s invitation. That is understandable. more..

A drama that probes on human weakness, chauvinism and phobias

Aug 7 (DM) Rajitha Dissanayake’s new play Juli Mase Dawasak (A Day in July) starts with a familiar setting; the drawing room of a middle class house with a couple in it.
