Cigarettes prices go up with excise duty hike

Aug 1 (AD) The excise duty on cigarettes has been increased by Rs 3.80 per stick with effect from midnight yesterday. The relevant govt notification said that the excise duty on cigarettes, each exceeding 72mm but not exceeding 84mm in length, has been increased to Rs 33,550 per 1000 cigarettes. Aug 1 (CT) IMF publication has said that the total debt of over 200 State-owned enterprises (SOEs) as at last year stood at Rs 1.4 trillion, equivalent to 10.8% of gross domestic product (GDP).
