We must keep unrelenting pressure on S&R

Sep 10 (Island) No need to get hopes too high, it could still end in a flop, but there is a need to keep relentless pressure and criticism on the govt. Short of anything that helps the Joint Opposition–Rajapaksa (JO-MaRa) rotters, one must not relax vigilance of the S&R outfit. However my expectations are different from other commentators, for example Jehan Perera’s (JP) piece "More Purposeful Govt in the Making" – Colombo Telegraph and Island 28 August. more..

Akila’s workless jobs: Driver for school without vehicle, cooks without kitchen

Sep 10 (ST) Offering jobs and ensuring votes at the next elections are standard operating rules for politicians. Otherwise, they will not be able to return to Parliament. Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, is just one such politician who follows this dictum to the hilt. No harm, one would say, since job opportunities are available more in his Ministry than many others. That is in schools and even cultural projects which more..

New tax law will adversely affect public: COPE

Sep 10 (NR) Chairman of the COPE, JVP MP Sunil Handunetti says the public will be aware of the harmful nature of the Inland Revenue Act after its enactment. The final result of the Act is the oppression of the masses on international pressure. The policy is such that all living and breathing things will be taxed. He said developed countries see people willingly pay taxes, they declare their income and tax statements and they all have tax files. more..

Baring it all seems unbearable to MPs sans Code of Conduct

Sep 11 (ST) Parliamentarians are easily irked by bad press, which is why MPs often raise privilege issues in the House to put the record right on reports that show them in bad light. This week one such issue cropped up over media reports of a large number of MPs’ failure to submit their assets and liabilities declaration forms, a charge denied by most lawmakers. Speaker Karu Jayasuriya backed the MPs saying most of the MPs had submitted their assets and liabilities declaration forms more..

Snubbing illegal orders without compromising integrity

Sep 11 (CT) As a former public officer who had learnt extremely hard way as to how to face similar situations, I thought it is nothing but right to share my experience which I believe would be useful to public servants today, provided they want to be independent without compromising their integrity. In the year 2001 I was the Head of the Customs Revenue Task Force. I was appointed to conduct a revenue fraud inquiry involving The Finance Company, Arjuna Ranatunga’s family and more..

The UNP’s 71st Anniversary: UNP safeguards not a family, but the country’s youth

Sep 11 (SO) The United National Party (UNP) survives today as one of the two major political parties in the country as its democratic attributes could keep pace with changing times. The RT Hon. D.S. Tilting windmills at blathering politicians is no answer to rule of law failures

Sep 11 (ST) A former Army Commander or two jousting before the television cameras for sport, alleging war crimes against each other, is a seducing sight for public consumption. But this is not what the crisis of justice in Sri Lanka is all about. Indeed, these deeply cynical games distract attention from institutional failures that go to the heart of political and military responsibility. That fact must be properly understood for any reform process to even begin, whether in relation to more..

What the hell is going on?

Sep 11 (CT) Even in a country where corruption has become a part of its culture and where there has been, for a considerable time (at least since reign of Yankee Dick Jayewardene) a total lack of anything resembling ethics, morality or principle in political practice, what has begun to unfold during tenure of current Yahapalanaya govt is bizarre to say the least. There's no comprehending what this lot, particularly its UNP component, is doing, even if one justifies most blatant political opportunism. more..

All-time combined India-Sri Lanka ODI XI
